I’m Moving To Canada! Toronto or Bust!

I’m going to make this one short and sweet.  Every company should take notes on the videos below.  Both of them are amazing examples of how you can change someone’s day or life just by thinking about the people you serve rather than the bottom line.

I came across the first video back in December, before I got the brilliant idea to start this blog.

Then today, I see this video:

So now you’re all like, so what’s the big deal and why are you moving to Canada?  Ok, maybe that was a little drastic; I wouldn’t survive a second in a Canadian Winter.  But WestJet Airlines and TD Bank, the companies featured in the videos above, are both Canadian companies and I think what they are doing is great.

Unfortunately, neither are available in Key West but I can tell you that if I ever the opportunity to fly WestJet I will, no matter the price; and I’m officially opening a bank account with TD Bank next time I visit my grandmother in Jacksonville.  I want to support companies that have a conscious.  Companies with soul.

One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned over the past year is to practice gratitude.  Count your blessings not your problems.  Say thank you.  And smile.

The Best Thing Happened To Me Today!

The best thing happened to me today!  I was sitting at my desk, doing some research and listening to my some songs on my iTunes.  I wasn’t listening to a particular playlist, artist, or genre, I was just letting iTunes do it’s thing and randomly shuffle through my song list.  Like most of you reading, my iTunes library is pretty eclectic; everything from “explicit gangsta rap” to Italian opera so it was really no surprise when Britney Spears’ Christmas tune “My Only Wish This Year” started coming through my earbuds.

It was what came on next that made my heart happy and eyes brim with tears.  It was a voice memo of my grandmother laughing.  I remember making the recording when I was in Jacksonville visiting with her a few weeks ago but had forgotten that voice memos automatically download to my iTunes library when I sync/ back up my iPhone.

*I just paid $99 to “upgrade” this blog so I could upload this audio file.

One of the side effects of my sister Ashlee’s passing is that I’ve started to notice and appreciate all the little things in life.  Things I would have taken for granted 2 years ago.  I remember sitting at the table in my grandmother’s kitchen when I made that voice memo.  It was the second take, I couldn’t get the app to record in time for her first laughing fit.  I just remember thinking that I loved the moment and want to remember her laugh for the rest of my life.  Mission accomplished.

It really isn’t until someone is gone that you would think about how much you miss someones laugh.  It’s like a fingerprint, everyone’s is different and no one’s exactly alike. So the next time you’re in a laughing fit with one of your favorite people remember this post and capture the moment, if not with your iPhone at least with your mind.  You’ll be glad you did!

My grandmother just turned 80 years old this year (still rocking her wedges) and is one of the most kind, loving, thoughtful, patient people I know; just being around her makes me have a smile on my face.  She’s an instant ego boost (as most grandparents are); every time I get a card from her it’s addressed to “My Beautiful Granddaughter” and every time I see her in person she tells me how fabulous I look, even when I know it’s a lie.  We both share a love for classic 80’s movies and can get down to the Bee Gee’s or Michael Jackson at the drop of a dime.  She loves Taco Bell and is a cheap date; 1 soft taco supreme and a senior coke, which comes to approximately $2.37.  We both like to gamble and have been members of The American Legion for over 30 years (yes, that’s a fact).  And to top it all off, she knows how to grill.

I really could go on and on about how awesome my Mom-Mom is but I don’t want to make you any more jealous than you already are.  Cheers to my Mom-Mom and thank you for brightening my day today!

You Are Beautiful

One small sticker, one powerful message.  I had first heard about this little sticker a few years ago, I don’t remember where or when but  remember loving the idea when I first heard about it.  A few weeks ago I visited their website and saw that they will send you some of these fabulous stickers for free, and for a small donation you can get a whole slew of these magical little affirmations.

Naturally I sent in a self addressed, stamped envelope with the suggested donation of $5 enclosed and patiently waited for my #YABsticker delivery to arrive.  Then one day a few weeks ago I got my envelope back in the mail! I opened it right up and took a look at the tiny little wonders.  I put them in my purse and started thinking about all the places I wanted to put one!

The one place I knew for sure I wanted to place a sticker was the most photographed site in Key West; The Southernmost Point.  So many pictures are taken there daily and imagine if my little sticker makes it into a few of them?!

So Skyy and I set out for a trek to The Southernmost Point last night to place our first sticker.  It’s really amazing how many beautiful and amazing things you start to notice when you focus on looking for the good in everything you do.  I decided to take my time walking through old town last night on our way to the buoy; to take in my surroundings and reconnect once again with why I pay $1250 a month to live in a 250-square-foot studio.

Our first stop was our favorite pocket park on the corner of Grinnell and Angela, also the home to our first #YABsticker.

Take 2.

Wouldn’t ya know it, when we walked out of the park and I caught a rainbow over my favorite intersection; Grinnell and Angel Street.

I took that rainbow as a sign from my guardian angels to look up on my walk to see what else I could find.

I fell in love with this door at first and then the whole house when I saw that little gem in the corner of the window.        Go Noles!

This beautiful tree (it’s even prettier because it’s not on my street and I don’t have to clean up all the flowers that fall)

My new favorite house in Key West (Corner of Whitehead and United Streets). All the right flags, old fashioned christmas lights, and an amazing yard to boot!

We made it to the Southernmost Point and of course there was a line of people waiting to get their pictures taken.  So I stuck my sticker on the back side of the landmark, where it will still be seen by tons and photographed by many.  It also reinforces the meaning of our motto in Key West; You Are Beautiful = One Human Family.

And check out the sunset we caught on our way home!  The sky was beautiful last night, some wicked clouds on one end of Duval and the beautiful sky pictured below on the other.

You Are Beautiful.  Three small words, one huge meaning.  It’s really amazing how you can turn your day or night around by looking up and looking for the good in everything.  So while some people may have been focusing on the black clouds that plagued half of the island last night, I myself, was focusing on the picturesque sunset and the people lining up to take their picture in the place that I call home.

Compliment 911!

Take 3 minutes and 28 seconds to watch this video, it will make you smile, and, if you are anything like me, probably cry (but a happy cry, not a sad cry):

Happy #SuperSoulSunday!  Sundays are my absolute favorite day of the week so I thought that I’d share with you one of my absolute FAVORITE websites, Soul Pancake.

The creators describe Soul Pancake as “Our brain batter of art, culture, science, philosophy, spirituality and humor is designed to open your mind, challenge your friends, and feel damn good.”  To me, Soul Pancake is many things, including my daily source of inspiration.  I peruse the site daily and love the “feel good feeling” that it evokes within me.

Today my inspiration comes from one of the activities featured on Soul Pancake called Compliment 911!  The instructions were simple:

Soul Pancake Activity #92:  Compliment 911!

Step 1: Jot down a time you needed a compliment.
Step 2: Give yourself a compliment.
Step 3: Write down a compliment for someone else.
Step 4: Go fishing in the comments section for compliments 🙂

So naturally I did just that.  Here’s my response:

1.  Tuesdays.
2.  You make me smile and inspire.
3.  Thank you for being born, you make my world a better place.
4.  Gone Fishing!  (My favorite compliment I found was:  you are a great loving heart and sparkling snow and burning sun and a shade of a shed and you are your favourite Radiohead song and an overwhelming pool of cute little things)

Also while on SoulPancake this morning I stumbled, as I often do, upon the cutest website, Emergency Compliment.  It was the inspiration for the activity above and for my post today:

Compliment I received today courtesy of Emergency Compliment. Love!

You see there are two parts to a compliment.  Part 1 is giving compliment; part 2 is accepting the compliment.  So often we have trouble accepting compliments given to us by others and I don’t understand why. All it takes is a good old fashion ‘thank you’.   In hopes of starting a domino effect of compliment accepting I’ll start with accepting the compliment above (duh!); THANK YOU!

The bottom line is that compliments are good karma.  They make other people feel good about themselves and bring a smile to your face because you are making someone else happy.  Imagine if we could harness the power of compliments… talk about clean, renewable energy!
